Embrace the Gray

“We don't just see the world through two choices. We create meaning through the stories we choose to tell ourselves.”

How many sides are there to each story?

Is everything just two sides?

What happens when we look beyond the duality and begin to see more possibilities...more ways to think, to feel, and to understand?

What if life isn't asking us to choose between black and white? What if it's inviting us to explore everything in between?

These questions inspired a song I recently wrote called Embrace the Grey. One of the central ideas in the lyrics is simple:

"We decide what things mean to us. We can change it day by day. It's not all black and white. Explore and understand—embrace the grey."

I've been thinking about those words a lot lately because they aren't just a philosophy.

They're about everyday life.

The other day I was given a complex project at work. At first, it looked overwhelming. There were so many details to capture that my mind immediately started asking questions: What should I include? What could I leave out? How do I make this clear enough that everyone can understand it?

I could have told myself this was going to be hard.

Instead, I decided it would be interesting.

That one decision changed everything.

I treated it like a puzzle instead of a problem. I organized my thoughts, asked AI to help me think through a few sections, stepped away overnight, and came back the next day with fresh eyes.

When I shared it with my supervisor, she didn't change a single thing.

What surprised me most wasn't that it turned out well.

It was that I genuinely enjoyed doing it.

Relationships invite us to embrace the grey, too.

Sometimes it feels as though someone always sees things differently than we do. Our first instinct is often to decide that one of us must be right.

But what if neither person has the whole picture?

What if understanding begins when we become more interested in their experience than defending our own?

Perhaps embracing the grey isn't about becoming uncertain.

It's about becoming more curious.

Curious enough to let life surprise us.

Curious enough to let people be different.

Curious enough to discover that we have far more freedom than we sometimes realize.

Our inner wisdom will take us there if we listen.

After all, we decide what things mean to us.

And maybe that's where freedom begins.
